What's News At Cape Don?
January 2005
It is the time of year when we would like to wish all our valued clients the very best for the coming 2005. It is fair to say that Kate and I have enjoyed each year more and more the longer we stay and we hope that we see more repeat clients as the years go by.
Thanks again to the clients who have revisited Cape Don and to the groups that are now becoming regulars each year.
Probably the biggest news for 2005 is the installation of air conditioning to the guest rooms. We now have the larger gen set installed so for those who prefer it, you will now have the choice of A/C along with the ceiling fans already installed. All aircraft travelling to Cape Don are now twin engine, no matter what the group size.
More Records!!
2004 was a special year for Cape Don with more records broken, and still new areas discovered. Our guides have successfully experimented with soft plastics which has resulted in more variety and larger sizes of fish than previously caught.
Our most regular client, Duncan Shirley (12 visits to Cape Don from UK), has again beaten his own record for most species caught by an individual - now 43 species. Duncan also enters the record book for raising the record for best team effort of 46 species by one boat in 7 days.
The Novelty catch for 2004 would have to go to Burt Thomas who caught 2 legal size barra on the one lure.! (I suppose this record can be beaten using the spare set of trebles)!
Probably the most excitable group was Dick and Gary from Victoria, who caught 17 Barramundi from one snag in a 40 minute session, - a memory that will stay with them forever.
Each year we say the records can't be beaten, however each year we keep raising the bar!
Fleet Update
For the past 3 years we have been upgrading our fleet to a point where we now operate 6 boats, 4 of which are between 6.2 metres and 7.5 metres, each suitable for 4 fishermen if required. All boats are equipped with GPS, sounders, radios and all safety requirements.
In 2005 all our boats will be equipped with high quality waterproof digital cameras enabling guests to view the days events at the lodge each evening. The images will then be able to be burnt to disc for guest presentation upon departure. For those of you who have great images of your last visit we would appreciate a copy for our brag board.
A popular request from group bookings is to have their new Cape Don fishing shirts embroidered with their team and personal names before they arrive, just adding to the competitive edge. (Keep this in mind if you are planning a group trip to Cape Don.)
Fly Fishing
With champion fly fishing guides on hand Cape Don had an exceptional year for fish species caught on fly. Anthony Hyde from Victoria still holds the record of 21 species on fly in 2 days, with Micah Adams tacking out the largest fish on fly with a 30Kg Mackerel. The most efficient all-round fly used was the orange and white Clouser with the Golden Bomber most effective on our barra.

We are now sponsored by Loomis rods so guests can enjoy the very best of fly fishing gear when fishing at Cape Don. For those of you who prefer to use your own gear, check our web site for the recommended tackle to bring.
Our new well equipped fly tying room now enables the guests to join their fishing guide in fly tying lessons or helping to make that irresistible fly for the next big catch. For the novice, our expert guides will provide fly casting lessons and provide tutoring.
Eco-Tours
For the non-angler we have developed more tours incorporating our new reef walk ending at a natural spa pool within the fringing reef complete with dozens of small reef fish viewed with goggles. Sunset nibbles and drinks on Turtle Island has proven a popular event at days end.
New locations have been found where we can look for wild buffalo and banteng cattle. Each year we learn more about the local wildlife calendar which enables us to track dolphins, turtles, manta rays and the pilot whales on their migratory path past Cape Don.
For those of you who may be contemplating a visit to Cape Don in 2005, please consider booking early so that we can secure the best available tides.
Tight Lines!
