Fly Fishing

Cape Don has access to a wide variety of saltwater fly fishing environments for the experienced or the novice fly fisherman wanting that “catch of a lifetime”.

Site casting in the clear flats and estuary systems, the challenge of the big pelagic fish in the bluewater and the precision casting for barramundi amongst the mangroves are all possible fly fishing experiences.

The Lodge has a fly tying station for the fly rodders wanting to try new fly styles on site with their experienced guide. Fly rods for practice or training, and specialty saltwater flies are available at the Lodge.

Suggestions for those wanting to bringing their own tackle:

Outfit 1 - Estuaries, flats and creeks (Barramundi, Threadfin Salmon, Mangrove Jack etc.)

  • 8/9 weight saltwater rod with appropriate reel
  • Reel should have at least 200 metres of 15 – 20kg backing (preferably braid)
  • Flyline – intermediate and/or floating (both weight forward.)
  • Class Leader 1 to 1.5 metres of 6-10kg
  • Shock tippet .5 metres of 20kg mono.

Outfit 2 - Off shore (Mackerel, Queenfish, Giant Trevally, Northern Bluefin Tuna etc)

  • 9/11 weight saltwater rod with appropriate reel
  • Reel should have large Arbor with at least 300metres of 20Kg backing (preferably braid)
  • Flyline – intermediate and/or fast sinking shooting line (both weight forward)
  • Class leader 1 to 2 metres of 8-10kg
  • Shock tippet .5 -1 metre 20Kg mono (or wire for Mackerel)
