Greedy GT’s & Quick-Firing Queenies

The Giant Trevally and Queenfish fishing at Cape Don is uniquely second to none. Found in absolute plague proportions all year round — so don’t hesitate to book and board that plane! The vast, clean waters surrounding Cape Don are home to literal hordes of fast Queenfish & generous GT schools that hunt the masses of baitfish that simply congregate around here at the NT’s most supreme GT and Queeny hotspot!

The GT’s are prized for their tenacious fighting ability. GT’s are the headline aggressive fish, famous for being entertaining — and are targeted for their furious power and stamina. Queenies can either go to flight with an acrobatic performance, or they will fight quite cleanly and powerfully just under the waters surface. But it’s never dull..

GT & Queenfish Hot Spots
Here are a few of our hot GT and Queenie slambait locations where double and triple hook ups are a common occurrence.

The ‘washing machine,’ a body of turbulent water found in front of the Cape Don lighthouse where the Arafura and Timor Seas meet. GT’s and Queenies congregate around the large rock ledges and bombies. Always fun. Never disappointing!

High Black Rock and Low Black Rock with their surrounding coral reefs are feeding places for these big pelagics. But watch that the dirty fighting GT doesn’t take you straight into the coral and cut you off on the sharp rock edges.

Other hot spots within Cape Don’s pinnacle fishing accommodation experience in remote Darwin include the Wreck, Bottle Neck, Beauford Island, outside Vashon Head, Hells Rock, Arrau and Primeys Billabong.

Adrenaline Pumping Fishing Experiences
Our guides guarantee that jigging and throwing poppers are the two most adrenaline pumping ways to land yourself these monster pelagics.

Jigging
Hooking a GT while jigging deep down with a soft plastic or marabou jig will get your tight drag squealing in protest. They put up a long hard fight and you will only get them to the boat once you have completely worn them out. But be warned you may get a hernia in the process. At these GT jigging hotspots they often take the jig mid way on the drop down; outside Lingi Point, the wreck, and Allaru.

Poppers
Do you enjoy the heart pumping excitement of watching scores of fish in hot pursuit of your lure?  Seeing all those fish competing with each other and seeing and feeling the hit at the same time? If this is you, the Cape Don GT & Queenie popper fishing experience is the one to sign up for!

You will also catch these beauties by throwing, jigging or trolling with soft plastics, marabou jigs and hard bodied lures.

No run — no fun for these fish! So make sure you book the right set of tides. Call for the latest tide and availability. We’ll guide you for the correct dates to join us at Cape Don — renown for being the top sport-fishing lodge in Australia!
